Born in Kodama, Musashi. Blinded at seven, he came to Edo, studied Kokugaku, and founded the Wagaku Kōdansho. Over more than forty years he compiled the 666-volume Gunsho Ruijū and 1,150-volume Zoku Gunsho Ruijū gathering 1,273 ancient and medieval texts—the foundation of Japanese classical studies.
