The Miya Disturbance — The Shogun's Anti-Hojo Movement and Expulsion
As the fourth shogun Fujiwara no Yoritsune grew, he chafed at being a puppet and drew closer to anti-Hojo vassals. In 1244, Hojo Tsunetoki detected this and deposed Yoritsune, installing his son Yoritsugu (age 6) as the fifth shogun. Anti-Hojo vassals continued to gather around the exiled Yoritsune in Kyoto (the Miya Disturbance, 1246). Hojo Tokiyori saw this as a threat and expelled Yoritsune to Kyoto permanently. Though used as a Fujiwara figurehead to bolster the shogunate's prestige, all of Yoritsune's attempts to recover real power were blocked.
