Eldest son of Michinaga. For over 50 years he served three emperors as Kampaku and Sesshō, but unable to become an imperial maternal grandfather, the Fujiwara grip on power began to slip. In 1052 he converted his Uji villa into Byōdō-in and built the Phoenix Hall the next year.
