Third son of Kaneie and brother of Michitaka. He engineered the abdication of Emperor Kazan to enthrone Ichijō. After his elder brother Michitaka's death in 995 he became Kampaku, only to die of plague seven days later, earning the nickname "Seven-Day Kampaku."

His swift death cleared the way for Michinaga.
