Three Surprising Facts
The Hollow Tree at Ishibashiyama — A Life-Risking Hiding Place That Saved Yoritomo
In August 1180, Yoritomo's army suffered a crushing defeat at Ishibashiyama. Doi Sanehira guided the fleeing Yoritomo to the mountains near Manazuru and hid him inside the hollow of a great tree, shielding him from the pursuing Taira forces. With enemy soldiers bearing down, this act of concealment would have cost Sanehira his own life if discovered. By saving Yoritomo's life in this desperate moment, he made the later founding of the Kamakura Shogunate possible. His son Tohira became the ancestor of the Kobayakawa clan, a lineage that continued to the Sengoku-era Kobayakawa Takakage.
