Born in 1291, Date Yukitomo was the 7th head of the Date clan. During the Kenmu Restoration he served under Kitabatake Akiie, governor of Mutsu, joining the council governing Oshu. After Akiie's death he remained loyal to the Southern Court under Kitabatake Chikafusa. In 1343 he and his kinsmen held out at Isa Castle in Hitachi's Isa district, resisting a prolonged siege by the Northern Court general Ko no Moroyuki in coordination with the nearby Oda, Seki, and Daiho Castles, before the castle fell that November and he withdrew to his own territory. Also accomplished in waka poetry, he was included in the imperial anthology Fuga Wakashu. He died in 1348 at age 58. His descendants would later produce the famous Sengoku-era daimyo Date Masamune.

A warrior equally versed in poetry, he remained steadfastly loyal to the Kitabatake father and son even as the Southern Court's cause grew increasingly hopeless.

Remembered as a key figure in the Date clan during the Nanboku-cho period, his lineage would eventually produce Date Masamune, ruler of Oshu. The siege of Isa Castle stands as a symbol of the Nanboku-cho conflict in Hitachi Province.
