"Starving out Miki" — Hideyoshi's Siege Starvation and a Warrior's Final Hour
From 1578 Hashiba Hideyoshi encircled Miki Castle and conducted a siege-starvation tactic, completely cutting off supply routes. Bessho Nagaharu held the castle for two years waiting for Mori clan reinforcements, but none came and starvation inside the castle grew severe. In January 1580, Nagaharu asked Hideyoshi to spare his soldiers and family in exchange for the deaths of his senior retainer, his brothers, his wife, and himself — and took his own life at twenty-two. This tragedy is still told both as an example of Hideyoshi's ruthless military strategy and of Nagaharu's noble samurai spirit.
