Three Surprising Facts
Supporting the Shogunate in Masako's Shadow — Reevaluated in the Taiga Drama
Miyoi (Awa no Tsubone), as Hojo Masako's younger sister, established her own standing in the shogunate by marrying Ano Zensho—seventh son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo—thus bridging the Minamoto shogunal family and the Hojo. Even after her husband Zensho was killed on Yoriie's order in 1203, she remained in Kamakura and continued participating in shogunal affairs as Masako's confidante. She served as nursemaid to the third shogun Sanetomo, playing a key mediating role between the shogunal family and the Hojo. In the 2022 NHK taiga drama "The 13 Lords of the Shogun," she was portrayed as "Miyoi"—a lively, strong-willed character—and received renewed appreciation. She outlived Masako (who died in 1225) and died herself around 1227.

Full Biography
From birth to death
Daughter of Hojo Tokimasa and close younger sister of Masako, she grew up with her sister in Izu and moved to Kamakura after Yoritomo's uprising. Her marriage to Ano Zensho—seventh son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo—was a politically strategic union that established her own standing within the shogunate. She served as a nursemaid figure for Yoriie, wielding influence through her role in raising the shogunal heir. After her husband Zensho was killed on Yoriie's order in 1203, she remained in Kamakura and continued to participate in shogunal affairs as a confidante of Masako. She became nursemaid to the third shogun Sanetomo, playing a vital mediating role between the shogunal family and the Hojo. After Sanetomo's assassination in 1219, tensions between the sisters sometimes surfaced over issues of shogunal succession and policy. She outlived Masako, who died in 1225, and herself died around 1227. She was portrayed as "Miyoi" in the 2022 NHK taiga drama "The 13 Lords of the Shogun," where she was reappraised as a lively and strong-willed character.
