The Collapse of the Anti-Nobunaga Alliance — Yoshikage's Indecision Destroyed the Asakura
Asakura Yoshikage was a key member of the anti-Nobunaga alliance and faced Oda Nobunaga alongside Azai Nagamasa. But he failed to secure decisive victory at the Battle of Anegawa in 1570 and repeatedly missed opportunities to march on Kyoto. In 1573, the alliance collapsed when Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki was expelled by Nobunaga. As Nobunaga invaded Echizen, betrayed by his own clan, Yoshikage suffered a crushing defeat at Tonesaka and was ultimately driven to suicide by his clansman Asakura Kagemoto. Yoshikage was an accomplished cultural figure who developed Ichijodani into a city rivaling Kyoto—but his indecisiveness as a military commander destroyed the Asakura.
