Studied Zhu Xi Confucianism under Kinoshita Jun'an and as lecturer to Shōguns Tokugawa Ienobu and Ietsugu led the "Shōtoku Reforms," recoinage, and reform of the Korean envoy protocols. His works include the Oritaku Shiba no Ki and the Seiyō Kibun.
